We’re starting 2020 off with a bang with the third installment of the
Great Canadian Projects issue. Thank you to all of the firms that participated
this year. It is quite exciting to see how this issue has grown
from 2018. Before diving into the great Canadian projects on page 25,
be sure to check-out our cover story.
Chance helical piles are being used as the foundation for a 32-storey apartment
tower in London, Ont. When complete the tower will be “North America’s Tallest
Building on Helical Piles” (page 6), adding another feather to the cap of these small,
but mighty piles. The project also had to overcome a few challenges including a
high water table, deep deposits of sand material, close proximity to surrounding
buildings and restricted street access.
As initiatives such as Bell Let’s Talk Day have made huge strides in helping to
end the stigma surrounding mental health, there is still a lot of work to do; especially
in the construction industry. Did you know that more construction workers
die by suicide each year than in any other industry? This is an alarming statistic
that needs to be changed. On page 16 we’re doing our part to end the stigma and
outline some tips to help ensure that not only do workers make it home at night,
they make it back to the jobsite in the morning.
Kicking off our celebration of great Canadian projects is Brewster Drilling and
Piling with our first international project! The Nova Scotia-based firm was contacted
by the Danish firm Burmeister Wains Scandinavian Contractors to assist in
the foundation of a power station in Bermuda. The jobsite was on a remote island
in the Atlantic Ocean, which created some logistical challenges. Flip to page 26 to
learn how Brewster Drilling overcame these challenges and completed this project.
We also caught up with Gilbert, makers of the Grizzly Multi-Grip, to learn how
their product assisted in the successful completion of a new sheet-pile dike to protect
some Quebec residents and their properties from spring flooding. Find that
story on page 31.
While working on the Highway 427 Expansion project in Toronto, Powell
Foundations had to enact some environmental protection measures after several
species at risk were discovered in the project path. Learn what they did, as well
as the full project scope on page 37. Another project that requires extensive environmental
protections is Roterra’s work on the Manitoba-Minnesota Transmission
Line. Find that article on page 43; it’s another project that is utilizing helical piles
in a big way.
As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of Piling Canada. Our next issue will take
a look at marine deep foundations, so please feel free to drop me a line of you have
a project, company or story you think should be included. If you haven’t yet, don’t
forget to follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter!
Happy piling,
Lindsay Risto
