generous US$50,000 National Partner
Grant from the Terracon Foundation.
The Foundation’s pledge will be used to
annually award a US$2,000 scholarship.
The Terracon Foundation encourages
employees to submit a grant
request each year for organizations
focused on education and the built
and natural environment. Andrew
Verity, national account manager
for Terracon’s transportation and
infrastructure sector, and member
of the DFI Educational Trust Board
of Trustees, championed the grant
applications.
“As a trustee and advocate for the
DFI Education Trust, I was honoured
to recommend the organization for a
Terracon Foundation grant,” said Verity.
“The Trust is committed to supporting
students in the fields of study related to
the deep foundations industry by providing
scholarships and opportunities
to meet and work with deep foundations
industry leaders.”
“DFI is extremely thankful for the
Terracon Foundation’s support of the
DFI Educational Trust,” said Theresa
Engler, DFI executive director. “The
future of our industry depends on
encouraging promising young engineers
to consider careers in the
deep foundations construction field.
Through the generous support of DFI
member companies, such as Terracon,
the DFI Educational Trust has awarded
more than $1.2 million in scholarships
to more than 300 students in
fields of study related to the deep
foundations industry.”
Several DFI Educational Trust
Scholarships, including the Terracon
Consultants Scholarship, will be
awarded this year through the Trust’s
At-Large Scholarship program. The
2020 application period for these
scholarships will open on April 1,
2020. More information is available

Aarsleff Ground Engineering
undertakes large-scale drilling
operations for the tallest
residential building in Denmark
The ground engineering contract for
what is to become the tallest residential
tower in Denmark is underway
with Aarsleff Ground Engineering
installing the drilled pile foundations
for the 143-metre-high Lighthouse 2.0
in Aarhus located at Aarhus Ø overlooking
the waterfront. Aarhus Ø is the
newest part of Aarhus and has become
a charming district of modern architecture
separated by water canals.
The Lighthouse will keep in line with
Scandinavia’s iconic architecture, built
amongst other stand-out developments
along the harbour such as The
Iceberg and Dokk1.
Clay of high plasticity, complex
logistics, wind factors and high-rise
challenges were embraced wholly by
Aarsleff Ground Engineering, who
reviewed various foundation solutions
and proposed that the building’s
foundation be on deep drilled piles.
This foundation method allows the
structural load to be transferred to the
subsoil which has deeper load-bearing
soil stratum to prevent long-term settlement
of the building.
Two highly monitored test piles to
full depth and full diameter were carried
out in the months prior to the
main drilling works to ensure that
