As the leaves change colour and the air turns crisp once again, I hope this past
summer proved to be successful for you and your teams. Hopefully you’ll
have a chance to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour, but in this everbusy
industry, that’s probably unlikely. At the very least I hope that you will
be able to find a few minutes to sit down and enjoy this issue of Piling Canada.
In this issue we caught up with DFI Corporation. The company, with its
headquarters in Edmonton, Alta., is celebrating 50 years in service. Congratulations
DFI Corporation on reaching this milestone! Did you know DFI got its start in
heavy-hauling? After discovering a need for reliable piling services in their area, the
company transitioned to deep foundations construction, later adding manufacturing
of both rigs and steel pipe piles to their services. Head over to page 11 for DFI’s take
on the last 50 years.
Around the end of May, I received a call from Jeff Goodsell over at Postech Screw
Piles. He informed me that despite the fact that Postech doesn’t install the piles or
work on the projects typically found within the pages of Piling Canada, they would
be marking a milestone that’s been a long time in the making: one million piles
installed. By my estimation, that’s a newsworthy number for anyone to achieve and
I was thrilled to be invited to witness the installation of Postech’s millionth (golden)
pile at a special ceremony in Winnipeg, Man. Coverage of the event is on page 25 and
please join me in congratulating Postech Screw Piles on one million piles installed!
While Postech may be installing gold into the ground, ROC Equipment has been
busy trying to help uncover it. The Utah-based company lends its expertise to the
reality TV show The Curse of Oak Island, now heading into its seventh season. That
story begins on page 28. I wonder, if a TV show started calling your office asking to
use your equipment to search for buried treasure, would you have the same reaction
as ROC Equipment CEO Vanessa Lucido? I might have.
Be sure to read “Working Platforms” on page 34. This in-depth investigation clearly
demonstrates how far the North American market needs to go to ensure a safe
working platform is under every rig on every job site. Tip overs and failures are far
too common (68 per cent of respondents to a Deep Foundations Institute survey
admitted their company had tipped a large piece of equipment due to inadequate working
surfaces), and our people are much too valuable. There is a lot of work to be done
and it is complicated, but I know this industry can do anything it puts its mind to.
Let’s put our minds to increasing safety on our job sites with safe working platforms.
As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of Piling Canada. I’m always on the lookout
for great stories from our industry to share, so please feel free to drop me a line.
Submissions are open for the third Great Canadian Projects issue. I can’t wait to see
what everyone has been busy with all year! If you haven’t yet, don’t forget to follow us
on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter!
Happy piling,
Lindsay Risto
