I come from a family of road-trippers. From a young age my brother and I
became accustomed to long days spent in the family van. Settling in the
backseat for the 24-hour drive from Winnipeg to Toronto – including stops
– to visit family was a signal of summer vacation for many years. Often,
these road trips would take us into the U.S. – Dad citing the cheaper gas
prices. Crossing back into Canada on one of these trips introduced me to the
Ambassador Bridge. It was incredible. The biggest bridge my eyes had seen to
that point – and blue!
Now reaching the end of its service life, the Ambassador Bridge at the
Windsor-Detroit Border Crossing will be replaced with the Gordie Howe
International Bridge. The new bridge is set to have the longest main span
of any cable-stayed bridge in North America, and will connect Canada and
the U.S. for 125 years. Find this issue’s cover story “A Tale of Two Sides” on
page 6 to learn about the foundation works from the teams on each side of
the border.
As the use of helical piles continues to expand throughout industry, flip
to page 16 for “Helical Evolution.” It’s a discussion on the development of
this piling system, from its initial use to now supporting high-rise residential
towers. Of course, this system is not for every project. Although, it will be
interesting to watch how further development could unlock more applications.
This issue’s legal article discusses prompt payment and interim adjudication.
Find it on page 51 for some key considerations as provinces across the
country look to enact prompt payment legislation. Currently, Ontario’s legislation
is the only one in effect. We’ll be sure to provide updates as the federal
and other provincial governments enact their legislation.
Head over to page 63 for the complete submission guidelines and form for
the 2022 Great Canadian Projects issue. (A fillable PDF entry form is available
at bit.ly/GCP_2022.) This annual issue is Piling Canada’s celebration of great
projects Canadian deep foundations firms completed in Canada and abroad.
There is an additional category for international firms that are working on
projects within Canada as well.
