I sincerely hope that this issue of Piling Canada reaches you in good health and
that a sense of normal is returning to your daily life. Although it may be months,
perhaps years, before a full return to normal operations, the quick pivot by our
hardy industry members to keep essential projects moving – and re-start nonessential
projects – has been incredible to witness. Sure, toolbox talks and general
practices may look a little different with physical distancing and additional personal
protective equipment being implemented, but the grit and determination that
have built this industry – and the world for that matter – are still present and that
will get industry to the other side of this pandemic.
When planning began on this issue – long before COVID-19 and many other
new terms entered our daily lexicon – the goal was to dive into the world of marine
deep foundations; a sector that has always held a special fascination for me, even as
a small child. To kick off this metaphorical dive, head over to our cover feature on
page 32 for a discussion on pile integrity testing for driven and drilled piles, specifically
in marine environments.
As organizations begin returning to work, now is a great time to take inventory
of your company’s psychological safety. What is psychological safety and how do
you know if your organization is psychologically safe? Head over to page 40 for
Timothy R. Clark’s – a former member of the deep foundations industry – guide
to identifying and establishing a psychologically safe workplace. Members of your
teams will be facing many difficulties as they return to work, it’s important they
know they’re safe – mentally and physically.
Did one of your projects have to stop work due to COVID-19? Be sure to read
the legal article on page 67 to see if your contract may qualify for the force majeure
clause. Be sure to consult with legal counsel before acting on the construction
claims outlined in the article.
We have a couple exciting things going on behind the scenes here at Piling
Canada. Although the lid is still on a lot of it, I am happy to announce that the
submission process for our 2021 Great Canadian Projects is now open. Submission
guidelines are on page 75.
As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of Piling Canada. We’re busy working on
the next issue, so please feel free to let me know what coverage your organization
needs to get back on track once the economy fully opens; we’re here to support your
industry efforts. If you haven’t yet, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn
and Twitter!
Take care and stay healthy,
Lindsay Risto
