The last Editor’s Letter of the year is typically one of pensive reflection for
myself. A look back at all that has changed over the course of a year, and
a chance to set the direction for the coming one. When we began planning
this special technology issue back in 2019, we had no clue what 2020
would bring; COVID-19 hadn’t been discovered in humans. Almost everything has
changed this year and the reality seems to be setting in that a return to the old normal
is further off than expected.
Much of our coverage this year has been on COVID-19 and we continue to
provide guidance for industry to navigate business operations as the pandemic
unfolds in this issue (visit page 45 for discussion on insurance coverage and page
49 for our legal article discussing contract issues, both focused on COVID-19) and
future issues as needed.
As the pandemic has unfolded, I have often wondered, where would we be
without technology? From remote access to networks, video conferencing, full conferences
and trade shows taking place virtually, technology has allowed industry to
stay connected and building. Although the construction sector has a reputation of
being slow to adopt new technology, advances in VR and AR are making it easier
than ever before to connect with teams to view site plans and jobsites in real-time,
virtually. Head over to page 12 to learn about two companies with advanced technology
to take your project into the future.
You may have seen a recent social media post that subtly announced the big
news I’ve been hinting at for the past few issues: Piling Canada is growing to six
issues in 2021! On behalf of myself and the entire Piling Canada team, we cannot
thank industry enough for your support over the past 15 years which has allowed
us to reach this incredible milestone.
Don’t forget, the 2021 Great Canadian Projects issue has been moved to Issue 2
2021, but the submission deadline remains the same: Jan. 22, 2021. Full submission
guidelines and entry form can be found on pages 63 and 64. If you have any questions
regarding the submission process, drop me a line. I cannot wait to see and
learn more about all of the amazing projects that have taken place this year, despite
the obvious challenges.
As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of Piling Canada. We’re busy working on
the next one, so please feel free to let me know what coverage you’d like to see; we’re
here to support your industry efforts. If you haven’t yet, don’t forget to follow us on
Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter!
Take care and stay healthy,
Lindsay Risto
