I can’t believe we’re already at our Q4 issue of Piling Canada; once again, another
year has absolutely flown by. As we get ready to welcome 2019, I hope you have the
chance to relax and reflect on the year that has been; not to mention get prepared
for what is sure to be a busy year.
This year saw some shake-ups and disturbances created by new legislation and policy
changes. The Trump administration-imposed steel tariffs caused some concern on this
side of the border. On page 32, we explore how the industry is coping three months in.
In October, Canada legalized cannabis for recreational use. As the legalization
date approached, companies across industries and sectors rushed to update
policies and procedures related to drugs and alcohol; especially those with
safety-sensitive positions. A desire to protect those working in these jobs was the
inspiration for SafetyScan, a portable device that measures an employee’s “fit for
work” status using involuntary eye movements. Read how this technology can keep
your workers safe on page 69.
I had the pleasure of joining Liebherr for their annual press tour that took attendees
to Burlington, Ont., in October. Piling Canada attended this event several years
ago and it was wonderful to be included this year. For an industry event wrap-up,
please go to page 37. Thank you again to our wonderful hosts, Liebherr! I’m looking
forward to the next press tour Piling Canada gets to be a part of.
This press tour was particularly exciting for me as part of the tour program
included a jobsite visit of this issue’s cover story, the Eglinton and Yonge LRT station.
The size of this project cannot be understated: roughly two-and-a-half city blocks in
length, being built under existing buildings and roadways – and around the current
station – it’s one of the largest underpinning projects ever undertaken in Canada.
Head over to page 26 for the full story.
For this issue’s Personnel – In the Rig column, Mark Halsall caught up with Sarah
Clark of Fraser River Pile & Dredge. Clark is the company’s president and CEO and discusses
her career and the changing landscape of the industry. That Q&A starts on page 65.
For our new readers, if you’d like to receive Piling Canada in the mail or join the quarterly
e-newsletter list, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If your company works in
Canada, we’d also love to write about you and your projects in the magazine. The process
is easy and I’m happy to tell you more! Be sure to follow Piling Canada on Twitter,
Facebook and LinkedIn, and view our digital edition archives at PilingCanada.ca.
In an effort to continue bringing you the content you want to read, we’ve created a
short Demographic Survey. Please head over to the Piling Canada website and take a few
minutes to complete this survey. Your voice and opinions directly influence the content
you find within our pages. As always, I love feedback and comments, and am always
open to suggestions, so if you know of a story you’d love to see in here, drop me a line.
Cheers!
